G *** I finally got a chance to use the Howard Leight electronic earmuffs I bought from Amazon. In a word they were great. I had been looking at $300 muffs due to already having a hearing loss and needing to hear range commands. After reading all the good reviews, some friend recommendations and the fact that Rob Latham uses them, I ordered a pair. However, I was a little skeptical of some of the reviews. I am not skeptical anymore. At the range, I was next to a guy shooting a .50 caliber Beowulf. I was about 4 feet to his right. When I saw him unpack it I knew it would be very loud and would really test the earmuffs. I already have damaged hearing and did not want any more damage. When he started firing, they worked great, the sound of the round was no problem. I was very pleasantly surprised. I could feel the concussion of each round he fired. The Leight's compressed the sound without any clipping, muffling or dead spots. I could hear people talk fine and hear other sounds around me. This is a first for me because of my hearing loss. The batteries were easy to install and they folded up into a a nice tight package. I would not hesitate to recommend these to anyone who shoots. The only complaints I have is that I wish the ear cups were a little larger so that the ear would go into the cup a little deeper. Also gel cups and a hygene kit would be nice. I bought these about a month ago, but, I wanted to put them thru a lot of testing before giving my opinion. These are very good shooting ears. You can hear the grass crunching when you walk when the volume is turned up all the way. I generally keep these on the whole day at the range. I am able to talk with my friends, here my radio and all activity around me. You have to get used to these, as, although they respond instantaneously to gunfire, you hear more of the high snap from the gun. They attenuate the sound .....your ears do not ring or hurt.....it's just a different type of sound. I found wearing the microphones pointing to the rear is better when shooting a rifle. The slim feature does not get in the way when your tucking in to the rifle. You must be careful when putting them on, as it takes a slight adjustment to make sure they are completely sealed around your ears. I love these things....but....the reason I went 4 stars instead of 5 is because the rubber material used on the earpieces seems to stick together whenever they contact each other. I have cleaned them, dried them, it does not seem to matter.....they will stick and start to pull apart. I solved this by taking a piece of cardboard and putting it between the ear pads when storing. I would highly recommend these to all, great workmanship and performance.....except the rubber padding. Capt. Ed B004U4A5RU US
