AKT1 Sport Sound Amplification Earmuff, Premium Ear Pro for Range, NRR 25 3 Almost no sound amplification - If you want sound amplification you must find another brand/model. Barry *** Three stars might be low depending on what you are looking for, but it is the best I can give for my interests. I have to ask what 6X amplification means??? These only amplify sound about 1.25 x above the naked ear. Sitting in a quiet room in front of the TV, I turn the volume down until I can barely hear it, but I can distinguish about one out of every 10 words. I put these on, and I can distinguish about one out of every 7 words. If I take them off and raise the TV volume one bar, I can distinguish almost every word, so their amplification is far less than raising the volume one bar on the TV. A friend brought his 4-year-old Howard Leight Sport ear-muffs over, and they were many times better even though there was a slight "hiss at max volume. My son (a range instructor) has a similar Howard Leight model, and he says the amplification is very good. The Howard Leight Sport is less bulky for rifle and shotgun shooting. The ATK1 are slightly bulky for rifle or shotgun shooting but only slightly. I wanted these for both hunting and home defense, so I consider them an inferior choice. On a positive note, the sound QUALITY is good. They look well made, and they are comfortable and fold up well. They also have a little more sound blocking than most electronic ear-muffs. If sound amplification is a feature you want, you have to find another brand or model. UPDATE: I bought a pair of Howard Leight "Impact Sport BOLT," which seem to only be a step up from the Impact Sport. They have a much faster attack time with no clipping of conversations and a slightly thicker foam on the earpiece. Most importantly, they amplify sound far better than the AKT1. They also have a more slim profile for shouldered firearms. They came with replacement ear pads and a belt clip and still cost significantly less than the AKT1. The Howard Leight might be slightly less comfortable for long-term wear, but gel pads would fix that. Strangely the differences in the color change the cost by as much as double. It is crazy.
