Woodworking: The Complete Step-by-Step Manual 4 Pretty good attempt at a woodworking book in the internet age Virginia*** I can’t imagine the challenge of producing a big “overview of woodworking” tome in the year 2020. It’s almost as crazy as spending hours of your time and tons of money to make your own furniture when you can buy mass manufactured furniture at big box stores for less. Who would buy such an old fashioned book when you can find anything you want on the internet? With videos? I wondered that as I flipped through this book that my well-meaning family gave me, an avid beginner hobbyist, as a gift. While I wouldn’t have bought this on my own, I am nevertheless enjoying it enough to write this review. And I will say this type of book does deserve its place alongside the endless information and content steam of the internet. As a beginner hobbyist woodworker, YouTube is my primary instructor but this book is useful for just flipping through the pages and reading about tools and joints in a relaxed way, with plenty of high quality photos, when I don’t want to look at an electronic device. Therefore this book is an excellent complement to online videos. It’s a good introduction to the basics. If and when I want to lean more, then of course I’ll do that on the internet. But this book serves as a good starting point and as a resource to return to for basic fundamental. If you paid full retail price then this is a bit expensive and you can probably find equally educational books at a used bookstore for a fraction of the price. But many of the used books from years past are older with fewer and poor quality photos, or longer narrative whereas readers of today (including this reader) demand clear photos with explanation. I really do want to give credit to the excellent and thorough photo quality of this book. It’s evident that the internet and its abundance of easy pics and videos has required book makers to work harder to stay relevant and this book does it well. Half of the book is devoted to 28 typical projects, from cutting boards to more complex pieces like dressers and beds. While I might not build any of these, and instead find exactly the plans I want on the internet, nevertheless the plans are very detailed with excellent photos that you rarely see in any plans. As such, I often read through these plans just for the techniques. There is a preference for hand tools but they do cover lower tools and machines a bit as well. As an American (US) reader, be aware that this is a UK book with British authors so there is a fair amount of terminology differences that can be confusing, although not indecipherable, if you are an American. Brits and Americans do work with mostly the same tools and techniques but sometimes use different words. Fortunately the book uses both inches and metric so everyone will be happy. Sanding of the handle edges with a coating of mineral oil or cutting board conditioner will make the handle feel better and water proof and protect it from drying out. I’ve made ginger salad dressing which included baby carrots and ginger, which can be difficult textures. The texture was reasonably not as good as if I used my vitamix high speed blender but my vitamix is very loud and a pain to drag out. Considering the convenience (and price) of the appliance, now I will gravitate toward the cuisinart one for dressings from now on. My family loved the salad dressing and said it was “just like from the restaurant.” It is sturdy and good quality. I like that there is a feature in the lid so you can drizzle in oil for making salad dressings. It allows the oil to drizzle in slowly to allow the ingredients to emulsify. When I use it for chopping veggies, I personally have a tendency to make the veggies very finely diced -almost a mince, but with practice I’ll be able to do just a normal dice for things like pico de gallo. I do enjoy chopping veggies by hand with our really nice Global brand knife, but I have been using this cuisinart chopper a lot more because it’s so convenient and I don’t have to wash a knife and clean off the cutting board. I've tried a couple of the settings that I thought I'd like and the Capresso produced a beautiful grind for my Braun model:KF-7170 Coffee Maker. There is a small issue with static electricity in the grounds reservoir that isn't' terrible. When cleaning the removable conical burr I brush the grounds onto my clean counter top or you can use a cutting board. I do this with the plastic reservoir in place to catch any grounds that fall through. When clean I assemble the Capresso and put the grounds in my Coffee Gator canister of ground coffee. It is working great for the application it is being used for in my household: slicing off 2-3 slices at a time off of a Velveeta cheese (not real cheese?) loaf. To slice to the bottom of the loaf, the cheese loaf has to be "hung over" the cutting board. The width of the slice generated by using the slicer without varying the "straight shot" angle seems thick (3./8"). It has only been hand washed and dried completely (because other reviewers complained about rust and coating/finish issues). The handle has a indentation (in not quite the right spot for my fingers/thumb/palm size) and a convenient "hanging" hole at the end of it. But the slicer's compact size (4.25" width at the top cutting edge including handle and 5.5" length) allows for storage ease in the kitchen utensil drawer. The cutting wire seems thick/substantial with adequate tension. Don't see any mechanism for tightening the wire or replacing it. (And may be if you needed to slice harder cheese, a thinner wire would be better?) If your household slices various types of "real" cheese regularly it might be a "better" choice to spend more (+$10) and buy something else? It’s a bit more expensive but worth avoiding the irritation of flicking each slice of bread out of the way Few people would say they really need one of these slicers, but it just works so well; it cuts perfect slices effortlessly even through the crustiest loaf. Any bread is easier to slice when it’s a day or two old but with this device you can slice it while it’s still warm from the oven. If the crumb of your bread is slightly gummy (perhaps because you are slicing it warm from the oven) a sticky residue may adhere to the blade but the blade detaches easily for washing. Leave the bread for a day or two if you want to avoid the stickiness. Of course you will also avoid the sumptuousness of butter melting into the still warm crumb of that first crusty slice. It anchors well to a smooth countertop - almost too well. While you can adjust the thickness, once you have found your preferred thickness you likely won’t change it. It takes up space but if you make two loaves at a time and slice them both at the same time you can keep it in a cupboard or drawer and bring it out when you need it. The folding left side of the base helps a bit with storage space constraints. If you have enough counter space leave it out and cut slices as you need them. Crumbs will chip off the crust as you slice. When you’re done tilt the slicer away from you and open the small detachable tray underneath. Brush the crumbs off and sweep them with your hand into a bag of breadcrumbs you might want to keep in your freezer. No more bread knives skating off the brittle crust on to my thumb. No more cutting grooves in my cutting boards as I saw my way through the bottom crust of each slice. No more squashing my loaf as I try to get the knife to cut through the top crust.
