Dave Gorman vs. the Rest of the World: If Life's a Game...Let's Play! 5 This book is one on a list of what I like to call "Bar Bet" books (even though I don't ... Barbara B*** I can't believe I'm the only person to write a review of this book so far, but I guess Dave Gorman is a lot more famous in the U.K. than the U.S.A, although I hope that changes. Anyway, as a frustrated board game player who can never find anyone who wants to play with me, I was intrigued by the premise of this book: Dave Gorman decides to use some downtime from work to play games, so he solicits offers via his Twitter feed by basically asking if anyone's up for a game? Gorman describes playing everything from Clue to Sock Golf, and everything from Poker to Frisbee, and describes his experiences and the people he meets along the way. At first, he plans to only play in London, but he ends up traveling to other areas. The vast majority of his experiences are positive ones. However, I guess if you're going to accept offers to play games with strangers you can expect a few weird encounters and Gorman details those too, especially one particularly scary experience toward the end of the book. This book is one on a list of what I like to call "Bar Bet" books (even though I don't think this book was the result of a bar bet), basically meaning the author is challenged or gives himself a challenge and chronicles his success or lack thereof in the book. Other examples include "Around Ireland With a Fridge," and pretty much anything nonfiction by Danny Wallace. I always find these experiences intriguing and this was no exception. Just spending time playing games for the sake of it, just like a kid, is the author's goal and leads to a nice read for those nostalgic for their carefree childhoods. Additionally, Gorman provides the rules for the most of the games he plays so that anyone interested can try them out too. Along those same lines, while some of the games Gorman played were familiar, he also came across quite a few rare or obscure games or games that people had made up themselves. Thus, by reading along, I discovered a whole new world of board games and sports-type games. Gorman is also very funny (he does comedic stage shows too) and he subtly slips in a lot of jokes, so you have to pay attention or you might miss them. Inasmuch as writing about the people he meets and places he travels, Gorman does use a great deal of detail. It does kind of slow down the action, which some might find annoying given the super quick pace of writing in most of today's popular non fiction and fiction books. I think it's still engaging enough though to keep readers reading till the end. There are also a lot of references to London and the U.K. in general that might make some readers in the U.S. feel sort of lost, so you might want to read the book with Google nearby. 0312278586 US
The Nanny Diaries: A Novel Hardcover – March 13, 2002 2 Quick, easy, light read. Son*** This book was a very quick and easy read, not a lot of details to get bogged down in, or sub-plots. For some that is not an issue, but it left me wanting more. For one thing, the mother - Mrs. X - is more of a caricature than a character. Not being associated that much with upper-class Manhattan society, I'm not sure this is an accurate portrayal or not, but it really came across as an over-exaggeration of a lot of 'worst-case scenarios'. The only little bits of humanity you see from her is when her marriage falls in shambles. The Nanny, referred to only as Nanny, also seems a little too sugar-sweet after awhile. Her lack of ability to stand up for herself until the very end got very annoying. At first, I thought it was clever using names such as Mrs. X and Nanny, but after awhile it got a bit tiresome, I felt like I was playing the old board game 'Scotland Yard' and was more distanced from the characters. The other improvement that could be made with this book is to spend a bit more time on the subplots - she meets a cute boy but that relationship isn't fully developed, her roomate kicks her out of the apartment, and there's no resolution on that story line at the end of the novel, she is able to complete her thesis in a 48 hour period. On one hand, these truncated sub-plots are indicative of how much her nanny job overtakes the rest of her life, yet at the same time, I really wanted to see her in a better, more positive light instead of seeing her as a voiceless girl who is being walked all over. 0745964141 US
My Very First Noah's Ark Playtime: Activity Book With Stickers Paperback – April 1, 2013 3 Great for a Summer Road Trip Book *** This sticker and activity book bases it's contents on the story of Noah and the Ark. There are a lot of stickers, a short board game, a recipe to try and a counting activity as well as a very abbreviated version of the story. Positives: This would be a great book to purchase for an upcoming road trip. The amount of stickers and activities would keep kids occupied for quite awhile. Negatives: I wasn't thrilled with the Bible story account given. It focuses more on the animals and not on showing us God's character that we learn about through this story. There was no reference to the grace and mercy shown to Noah or God's faithfulness and goodness. It also fails to mention the reason of the flood and God's judgment of sin. The only other downside is that once the stickers are all used, there aren't a lot of other activities to keep using the book. However, still a nice book to occupy kids for a time. Talking Points: As your child does the activities and you read to them, be sure and use Scripture (Genesis 6-9) to teach your children about the character of God. This story teaches us so much about our own sinful hearts, God's holiness and judgment of sin, and the riches of his grace that he granted Noah and his family and us today. Age Level: 4-6 years of age. I received a free copy of this book from Kregel Publishing in exchange for this book. 0786964502 US

Hitler's War Against the Jews 4 Holocaust History for Middle Schoolers Sara R*** This books is a good historical treatment for middle school students. The first half of the book tells about Hitler and the German extermination of the Jews and the second half tell the Jews' side of the story. Black and white pictures are plentiful with one every few pages. Kids will understand how prevalent anti-Semitism was when they see the picture of a game board for "Jews Get Out," a board game sold in Germany in 1939 and 1940. The one thing I did not like was on a map which shows the destruction of the Jews in Europe by country (showing the number of Jews killed over the prewar Jewish population), you cannot read the numbers for Poland because they are stuck in a crack. Also the map of Europe under the German Rule is hard to read because of its black and white color scheme. But all in all, the book is an easy to read and informative history of this time. 1223063119 US

Cryptid Board Game, 10 years 3 Imagination required Leslie S*** The idea of this game sounded exciting but my desire to play it quickly dimenished once I realized the game's "cryptids" are not pictured anywhere besides the box. You are basically trying to find a hex on a map more than "discovering a cryptid". Its fun deducing with friends but then you will get it over with and go well that was it? A game featuring the existence of phenomenal creatures should have more stakes. The game is also a little difficult to set up in my opinion as you have to set the board and give clues as to not give it away to yourself if you intend to play. The game is interesting to say the least, it could serve as a mold to expand on in the future. That being said, I wouldnt reccomend buying this if you expect something exciting or are not a fan of logic based board games 1542501857 US
Growing Up: Farm Life & Basketball in the 1940s & '50s 4 Great book! Scott *** I loved reading this book with my basketball loving 16 year old son. He chose it for a school project. It was nostalgic because my dad grew up in Plain City Ohio on a farm and was born in 1940 about the same time as the author and shared many of the same experiences. The book helped us see that a lot of things have changed ( we have good heat and air conditioning, and 21/2 bathrooms vs an outhouse) and a lot has stayed the same (still love to play outside together, play baseball and basketball, play board games and love our family). This book was fun to read, interesting and helped build a connection between my dad and his grandson. It was a positive book to read and inspiring to see the author be the first of his family to graduate college with the help a basketball scholarship. 1589947207 US
Asmodee A Game of Thrones The Board Game (2nd Edition) - Epic Strategy in The World of Westeros, Tactical Wargame for Adults, 1 Most complicated game ever kroo*** I'd give this a 0 stars if possible. I really don't understand how people are rating this game high at all. I'm a big GOT fan but this game is extremely dense, annoying, and not even remotely fun. To start, there are hundreds of pieces and it is confusing which piece is what. We had to google what some of the pieces were since the 20+ page rule book didn't say what they were. It took almost 2 hours just to set up the board the first game. The rules are extremely lengthy and also it seems there are exceptions to every rule. The section just on combat is 6+ pages. 1593270542 US
The Unofficial LEGO Builder's Guide Paperback – September 1, 2005 5 A complete book review: An essential book for any builder. Bob Ro*** While purchasing a child's Christmas gift this year (a LEGO engineering set), I came across this book and ordered it for myself. Before reading it, I had not built with LEGOs in years, and that was with the MINDSTORMS NXT set, which doesn't contain standard LEGOs. All of my previous LEGO reading was confined to MINDSTORMS material. It only took a few days for me to read this entire book, despite the main text being almost 300 pages. I found Bedford's prose to be straightforward and readable, without being too technical for a general reader of age 12+ (8th grade and up). Readers younger than 12 may do well with the book if they read it with an adult. The book has 13 chapters. Each chapter is organized somewhat like a textbook, with a basic introduction, increasing complexity as the chapter goes on, and then a review at the end. While the book doesn't seem to be intended for academic purposes, I could see it being used in a high school course on applied science or sculpture. Allan, if you're reading this, you might improve future editions of the book by adding a "challenges" section after the "Review" in each chapter, much like textbooks often have a "problems" section. McCloud does something similar in "Making Comics". 1. The LEGO System: Endless Possibilities This chapter provides the basic definitions for bricks, plates, and other pieces common in the LEGO system. I'll admit that before reading this chapter, I had no idea what the names of these pieces were. This chapter and the next are probably the most useful for general LEGO users of any age. Knowing what something is called and its basic uses (and misuses) empowers the builder. No more saying, "I need one of those flat pieces that has 2 little nubs on one side and 3 on the other side." After reading this chapter, you can just say, "I need a 2x3 plate." This chapter explains how a LEGO brick works. I never had thought so deeply about how a brick is made or its individual characteristics until reading this. I'm not ashamed to say that the section called "Why Precision Manufacturing Matters" forced me to contemplate the awesomeness of the LEGO brick and why it is superior to almost any other building toy. 2. Back to Basics: Tips and Techniques Bedford uses this chapter to outline ways to use LEGOs to make sturdier models. Are you, or your child, having trouble constructing buildings that stay "up"? I know this was a problem for me as a kid. This chapter shows you simple ways to construct walls, arches, beams, etc that do not easily crumble or fall. Essential for building. 3. Minifig Scale Minifigs are the little yellow people of the LEGO world. Pretty much all of the non-Technic LEGO models and kits are designed using the Minifig scale. Speaking of which, Bedford does a nice job of explaining how to determine scale and scaling factors for models in this chapter, a skill anybody can apply to other building projects. The chapter contains a detailed walkthrough of a train station model. I built it myself and had a nice sense of satisfaction when I was done. One of the cool things about the train station model are the details inside and outside: windows, chairs, and archways. Bedford demonstrates invisible design with this station model, because the roof is carefully made to fit snugly on the building, but can easily be removed for play. Some people here have complained about the lack of color in the instructions. This book is printed by a small publisher, so I would say the lack of color makes this book as affordable as it is. You can choose your own colors anyway. 4. Miniland Scale I am fascinated by Miniland scale! This is the scale used at LEGO theme parks, and it is larger, and often more realistic, than Minifig scale. Bedford shows you how to create Miniland people, step by step. He also describes a way to create realistic building facades and scenes for this scale. Inspired by this chapter, I am in the process of planning a Miniland-scale row of Nyhavn buildings, based on the one in Billund's LEGOLAND. This book allowed me to understand what I'm seeing in pictures of those LEGO buildings. 5. Jumbo Elements: Building Bigger Bricks It never occurred to me before, but you can scale-up LEGO bricks and build larger versions to make jumbo models. Bedford shows you how to do it here. I haven't done any of the projects in this chapter yet, but it's pretty interesting. 6. Microscale Building This is another fascinating scale: models smaller than Minifig scale. Bedford discusses ways to create models at this tiny scale, including a few projects like a truck, a boat, and the Empire State Building. There's plenty of good art philosophy here, such as the process of deciding what details to include and what to leave out when making a model. 7. Sculptures: The shape of things to build Bedford demonstrates how to construct spheres and other rounded objects and details for sculptures. This chapter has a project: constructing a model of the Sphinx. I don't have the brick inventory for the project, but the techniques shown can be applied to other models. 8. Mosaics: Patterns and pictures in bricks Want to know how to make the mosaics you see at LEGO stores? This chapter shows you how. Bedford demonstrates a couple different styles of mosaic, studs-up and studs-out, and also two subjects: geometric patterns and mosaics based on pictures. 9. Technic This chapter is a basic introduction to the Technic system and its pieces. Bedford describes the basic names and uses of the common pieces, and so this is a Technic-analog to chapter 1. 10. Putting it all together: Where ideas meet bricks This is partly a philosophical chapter about using the techniques and skills learned in the previous chapters to inspire creativity and new models. I think this is where a lot of LEGO builders get stuck: "What do I build and how do I build it?" This chapter synthesizes the previous lessons and shows the reader how to translate ideas into models. I think after reading the first 10 chapters of this book, LEGO builders will have an easier time deciding what to build. Just like any other creative skill, like painting, drawing, photography, or sculpture, once you know the foundation techniques and terminology, it's easier to implement your own projects. This chapter includes a project that walks the reader through the whole process, including building a space shuttle model. 11. Beyond Just Bricks: Other Things To Do Besides Building This chapter delves a little deeper into the LEGO world. Bedford encourages readers to write reviews of LEGO models and how to create step-by-step instructions for models. There is a small bit here about using computer software for LEGO models, though it isn't developed much. Perhaps this is because No Starch Press has a book called "Virtual Lego", which is entirely devoted to such software (or maybe because that topic is out of the scope of this book). The chapter also shows how to make board game-style LEGO games. 12. Sorting, Storage, and sitting down to build something Bedford discusses here ways to organize LEGOs to maximize efficiency in building. This is geared more for an adult builder than children. When I took my LEGOs out of the closet to work with this book, they were completely disorganized. I think most LEGO builders probably are like me and just throw them in containers. I've started to sort them according to brick-type, which has made building MUCH easier. I haven't implemented all of Bedford's tricks from this chapter. I'm sure if my collection grows I'll eventually have to. 13. Making and using tools for LEGO projects This short chapter describes something most people probably don't even consider: tools for LEGO construction. Bedford shows some simple tools you make from your own LEGOs to assist in building common elements. Also, if you haven't purchased a Brick Separator from LEGO, get one now! It's one of those things that will save your teeth and fingernails. The appendices include a Brickopedia, which doesn't have EVERY piece, and some reviewers have claimed. It is comprehensive for the major pieces and bricks that you might use. The Brickopedia includes part names and numbers, to help you when finding them online or in a store. OVERALL: This is an essential book for any LEGO builder. It's easy to see why it's so popular. It helps you build skills and techniques that other books do not. It has a breezy prose style that should be readable by anyone 8th grade and up. It's well worth the low price offered here. While I think the last couple of chapters are significantly weaker than the earlier chapters, the entirely of the book is a 5-star read. 1600374476 US

As she puts in the book, "People who yell feel anything but safe." And while that does not completely excuse his actions, I'm able to look at it from a different viewpoint. Counterfeit Poles: A Story of Survival Under Nazi Occupation Paperback – April 1, 2026 5 A view of the Holocaust from the inside, and survival by one Jewish couple! Jeffr*** Jerry Drew’s book review about his father’s experience in WWII under Nazi occupation and the resistance. The Counterfeit Poles. This is a preliminary review after reading the initial 42 pages. I wanted to enter a review as this book has a significant meaning to me. For one, I am a childhood friend of Jerry, the only child of Nathan and Helen Drew. I had spent countless hours playing board games with Jerry, and occasionally having lunch prepared by Helen. I knew nothing about Nathan’s and Helen’s history during WWII. Secondly, my own father was the third and final member of his immediate family to leave Poland pre-1941, as his remaining 4 siblings and parents (and many cousins) perished during the Holocaust. The early history of WWII (1939-1941) as related by Nathan is quite gripping. Specifically, the stories of Jews being murdered by the Nazis, ghettos being created, hiding from the Nazis, and Nathan moving between towns to stay alive tells me a story that my own father never talked about in the pre-WWII time frame (my own father left Poland for the United States in 1938, and eventually served in the Navy). If anyone lost relatives during the Holocaust (that they never met), this book is especially revealing about how the Nazis systematically murdered innocent people. I will update this review as I move further along in reading The Counterfeit Poles. 1998816036 US

Harry Potter Sorcerers Stone Trivia Game 4 Perfect Game for Harry Potter Fans Christian and *** I'm a certified Harry Potter fan and I love everything related to the character. My friend had this board game and we had a blast playing this in college. Sadly, I lost the board game and all its beautiful pieces. I was so happy finding the game on Amazon. The spell cards, charm cards, curse cards, trivia questions were the same as I remember. The board was the same beloved 4-fold thick square of cardboard with 4 houses in the corners and the big landing area in the middle. Sadly, the pieces were different from what I remember. The old game we had came with a small sorting hat where 4 colored clear stones (red, green, blue, and yellow) and the pieces were stored. The pieces were colored silver and heavier. The new set doesn't have the hat and the stones and the moving pieces were light plastics. Other than that, I still enjoy playing it like before. I would really like to find the older set to replace the one I lost though. Also, this only had trivia questions about the first book. They should update it with all the other books. B00004Z6I0 US

Lost - The Game 5 Awesome!! Marck Thom*** I love 'Lost' and I feel like this game really gets the point of the show. It is a little bit dated since it's clear that it was made either during or right after season 2, but still, a very well executed board game adaptation of a great show. B000FGG9IG US
