An owner may therefore believe everything is perfectly fine while overlooking relatively small environmental factors that matter considerably to the cat. Throughout my life, I have seen genuinely loving and devoted cat owners make some of the simplest mistakes, not because they did not care, but because no one ever taught them differently. And that is really my point: loving an animal and understanding an animal are not automatically the same thing. Some of the easiest mistakes in feline care are completely avoidable with just a little effort to understand your pet’s biology, evolutionary history, and natural behavior. If we are willing to spend considerable money giving our cats the very best, surely they are worth spending a little time learning the science behind what “the very best” actually means. Hydration is extraordinarily important to feline health, particularly because cats are naturally poor drinkers compared with many other domestic animals. So, if you are willing to invest this much money in providing clean, appealing water for your cat, as I happily do for mine, please invest a little time in understanding feline biology and behavior, too. And most importantly, please stop treating cats as though they are simply small dogs with litter boxes. They are not. They hunt differently, eat differently, drink differently, communicate differently, and interact with their environment differently. Providing excellent care means respecting the animal’s biology, not merely purchasing expensive products and arranging them in ways that seem convenient or attractive to us.
