I highly recommend using it this way. The magnets are very powerful and I have locked onto a stud nail easily. CH Hanson 03040 Magnetic Stud Finder 5 Cheap yet handy as hell gehs*** I only need to use a stud finder about once in a blue moon to mainly just hang up pictures, the occasional magnetic kitchen knife strip, or mail organizer by the front door so I couldn't really justify spending a lot of money for a fancy stud finder when I wasn't going to utilize it more than a few times a year. I got this thing and loved its simplicity. Wave it around, find where they used metal nails in the wood studs, and you're good to go. If you actually do home repairs more frequently, you might want to look into something with more features like a laser line guide or something nonmagnetic which can detect the wood studs rather than metal nails, but if you're like me and rarely ever need to break out a stud finder, then this is the tool for you. This stud-finder takes you back to basics. It requires no batteries; it is basically just a really strong magnet. As other reviewers suggested, tie a string to the stud-finder so you can "dangle" it and drag it across the wall. When it finds metal, you will know. Yes, it is not actually finding a stud, but it is finding the nail in the stud. And, yes, this means that you'll have to do a little guess work to find exactly where the stud begins and ends, but that is not very hard to do. This will also find other metal in your wall (especially if you are looking for studs around a fireplace),but, using simple logic, it is easy to figure out what's a nail in the stud and what's not. This is a no-frills gadget that I would highly recommend, especially if those fancy expensive stud finder machines intimidate you. B000WYVBR0 US

EVER. Not only were the instructions clear and included both concrete wall and drywall installation, but it came with a LEVEL. Who gives you a level in an install kit?! An awesome manufacturer, that's who! There was an HDMI cable in the box and all the bolts/screw/washers were in an interconnected plastic wrap compartment strip, sectioned off and labeled clearly. Perfectly organized and had everything you needed, except a screw driver. There were sizes of screws/bolts for any TV spec imaginable, as well as plates to extend it for different TV sizes.
