Ja*** I originally purchased my vacuum sealer for camping: to seal and protect homemade food, mixes, etc., in portion-sized packages, as well as to keep emergency items, like extra matches, first aid supplies, etc., dry, in case a canoe capsized. More recently, I have been using it for breaking down and freezing food purchased at lower prices, in larger, ‘family packs’, and for sous vide cooking. For all of these uses I chose vacuum sealer bags sold in rolls, that can be sized to most any length or width package, as long as enough edge material is retained for vacuuming and sealing. This seemed to be the most economical approach, with the least waste of material. But it does take time to cut, then seal, the formed bag on multiple sides. These 1-pint FoodSaver bags appeared to offer convenience for items that would fit. Usable inside measurements are approximately 5x6-1/4 inches, allowing for a top, and the bottom, seal (5-3/4x9-3/8 inches, total size). They are roughly close in volume to a zipper-style sandwich bag, although, with a taller, narrower, profile. They have a quality feel and weight, with one side smooth on the inside, and the other side textured, to allow air to escape. They feel like they will hold up to repetitive handling, such as when camping. This size bag would generally be good for portioning snacks, nuts, dried fruit, etc., or items added to lunch bags, as well as for camping. They are really nice for freezing leftovers in single-portion sized packages, for convenience, and to minimize food waste. They will also be good for those emergency supplies, and for storing smaller, non-food items that might tear a household grade plastic bag. I still ended up cutting a few of the bags in half, for smaller items. My vacuum sealer requires about 2-1/2” of empty bag at the top to seal properly, so there is a limit on how many times this can be done. One difference noted on these bags, is a ‘factory installed’ slit, part-way through the sealed seams, on each side, to make the sealed bag easy to tear open: no knife or scissors needed. They tore open with a little bit of effort, leaving a slightly rough edge. But really helpful for things like snack foods, where a knife or scissors are not readily available. Actually calculating the cost per square foot of pre-sized bags versus roll stock is tricky, because prices vary with the brand, size, quantity, etc. However, it appears that this style costs a bit more. The trade off is convenience. If a limited number of pre-sized bags are used, the total, extra cost, per bag, is limited. Vacuum Sealer for Food, Handheld Vacuum Sealer 5 The Liquid Drain Is What Makes This So Useful for Our Bulk Meat Prep Studio*** We do quite a bit of bulk meat prep, and we also sous vide regularly. A lot of what we do is portioned, prepped, vacuum sealed and then frozen so it's ready when we need it. For that kind of workflow, this little cordless sealer has worked extremely well. The feature that has made the biggest difference for us is the external liquid drain tube. Anyone who has tried vacuum sealing fresh chicken, marinated meat or anything else with much moisture knows what happens—the vacuum starts pulling liquid right along with the air. With this, that liquid has somewhere to go rather than getting sucked into the machine. That sounds like a small addition. In actual use, it's a big one. Pros External liquid drain: Easily our favorite feature. It makes dealing with moist meats much less frustrating. Cordless: We can work wherever we're prepping food instead of arranging everything around an outlet. USB-C rechargeable: No separate proprietary charger to keep track of. One-button operation: Put the sealer over the valve and let it do its job. There's very little to figure out. Automatic shutoff: We don't have to stand there guessing when enough air has been removed. Reusable bags included: It comes with 30 bags in three sizes. No proprietary-bag requirement: This is a big plus for us. We're not locked into continually buying one manufacturer's bags. Washable vacuum interface: Particularly useful considering we're working with meat and liquids. Battery display: It's nice knowing how much charge is left before starting a larger batch. Cons This style of vacuum sealer requires valved vacuum bags, so while they don't have to be proprietary, you still need the correct type of bag. Wet foods require a little more attention than dry foods. The drain handles pulled liquid well, but we'd still rather keep unnecessary liquid out of the vacuum path whenever possible. For someone sealing huge quantities continuously, a full-size countertop machine may still be faster. The advantage here is portability and convenience. Ease of Use This is considerably simpler than some of the vacuum-sealing setups we've used. There's no big countertop appliance to drag out, no cord to deal with and very little setup. That's particularly nice when we're doing a batch of meat for the freezer. Portion it, put it in the bag, remove the air and move on to the next one. Value for Money Between the cordless operation, rechargeable battery, included reusable bags and the ability to use compatible bags from other sources, there's good long-term value here. Not being tied to proprietary bags matters to us because the consumables can ultimately cost more than the sealer. Our Sous Vide Use This fits our sous vide routine particularly well. We can prep several meals at once, vacuum them, freeze them and have them ready for later. With meats that release a fair amount of liquid during sealing, that external drain tube has gone from sounding like an interesting feature to being something we genuinely wouldn't want to give up. Bottom Line There are plenty of handheld vacuum sealers that can suck the air out of a bag. The combination of cordless operation, non-proprietary compatible bags and especially that external liquid drain is what separates this one for us.
