Apple charges waaaaaaay too much for battery replacement and sometimes you are really better off just buying a new notebook :). So, we decided to do it ourselves to save some money and refurbish this MacBook with a brand-new battery. I chose this battery replacement kit because it includes everything you need to do it yourself. The whole process is a bit complicated because Apple never makes it easy for their users to repair their tech. The battery is glued, and you have to disconnect everything and remove the PCB, but once an old, bloated battery was finally removed, putting back this new one was a breeze. It fits right in, has an already pre-applied glue layer and sticks well (wipe out your Mac body inside at the place of the battery with alcohol prior to this) and then put everything back together in reverse order. This 3rd party battery looks just like the OEM one, all connectors fit in nicely, I had absolutely zero issues. As I said, it comes with all the tools you need to replace the battery but no detailed instructions on how to do it, so I strongly recommend watching a few YouTube tutorials first before attempting this repair. I actually needed a few other tools to pry out the old battery, but you still can get it done with what's in the kit. Pro-tip - get a heat gun or a heating pad and gently heat up the area where the old battery is glued, this makes removal much easier. End-to-end, this is a complete kit with an excellent battery, and everything needed to get your Mac back in tip-top shape! And I have saved quite a bit of money doing it myself instead of going to a genius bar. I can't comment about its lifetime, the manufacturer claims that it all sorts of safety features (overcharge, circuit-overload, short-circuit, temperature protection, and more!), and can be recharged 1000+ times, so I'll know in a year or so and will update this review accordingly. Almost (Heating Pads are NOT Working [Update]) LaNette*** This summer a feral tomcat was given to us by the Cat Distribution System, whom we named Fred. Fred was wild but quickly discovered not all hoomans are bad. After a few months of feeding and coaxing Fred has decided to call our yard his home. Living in Minnesota in the wintertime has its challenges, so finding Fred a warm and secure house for the winter was very important. This unit fills the bill! BYW, very easy to assemble, did it myself in less than an hour. However, a few modifications were needed to 1) combat the Minnesota winter's cold and extreme WIND and 2) make the house inaccessible to varmints. We live on the river, and skunks and particularly opossums, LOVE to take over a cat barn if they can get into it. The consensus among pet owners is that you have to get the doorway at least 36" off the ground, with no "climbing" opportunity to it. A cat can jump 15 times its own height; these varmints cannot. My plan was to block off the bottom floor opening and use the top floor doorway only. Stacking cement blocks 3-high brought the top door to about 39" off the sidewalk, so that worked. I could have simply put a piece of plywood over the lower door but instead bought a $7 clear plastic box from Walmart and cut a hole in the lid the same size as the doorway. I left off the little overhang over that door, then using wood screws attached the lid, top-side to the barn wall, over the doorway. The box has clamps that lock onto the lid, creating a sun porch. I added a layer of insulation on the bottom with a rug on it and Fred has a sunny solar-powered SAFE napping spot when the sun shines. I also added a 4x4 brace on the bottom to support the box and keep the seal tight, as it seems our Fred has gotten a little chonkier than when he arrived here. The bottom shelf on the side under the top door, which is actually the bottom floor, also presented a problem in that it would be a landing spot much lower than the necessary 36". The solution was pretty much the same as the front door: I found a clear, 76-quart plastic box for about $13 at Walmart that JUST covered the side of the barn. I cut the openings in the lid, heavily weather-stripped the edge before using wood screens to attach it to the side, I added an extension to the shelf on the door to extend it past the depth of the box, then cut a hole in the bottom of the box where the shelf fits through. There was just enough room for a 2x4 between the shelf and the bottom of the box which gives it the needed support. One last update was motion-activated LED light inside the plastic box which lights up so we can see from our windows when Fred comes home. So this is Fred; this is Fred's shed, and inside of Fred's shed is Fred's bed. Ok, lots of information, but I thought it might be helpful to other DIY-ers who are caring for the wild ones in cold climates. UPDATE: The heating pads are NOT heating consistently; we're down in the 24-degree days of early winter and the pads are barely warm. I've contacted the seller; hopefully can get it resolved.
