The box is hinged and opens to reveal all the colored pencils at once. They come with a sharpener which has its own little slot in the case. I didn’t compare colors. Barbie™ Dream Job Drawing Projector Art Activity Kit for Kids Ages 5+ 3 This projector is very "gimmicky" but doesn't deliver in the long run HotFl*** I ordered this for my 7-year-old niece, who loves to draw and is very creative. But before I see her and sit down with her to show her how to use it, I knew I had to learn what this Barbie Dream Job projector actually does or risk embarrassing myself. So I unboxed this thing and had a look. My first surprise was wondering if I had ordered the wrong thing. This was supposed to be an artistic thing, but it kept looking like some kind of pink and purple science fiction duck. I was confused, but figured I'd get there eventually. The instruction book (thankfully printed, not online) fell out of the box right when I was ready to pull some hair out. And then it began to make a little sense. There are little legs that pull down or out, sort of both, to steady the projector. Then I added batteries to it (3 AAAs) and got a piece of marker paper (card stock or plain copy paper will do). Now that the projector is set up, you just turn it on and put one of the included 4 wheels or disks inside the projector. There's an obvious slot for them right above the purple projector light; you can't miss it. My first picture was a Space Shuttle. Time to draw. So after all that messing about, I notice the drawing projecting onto the paper is out of focus and a little off the page, so adjustments must be made. Instructions say to move the projector up or down using the 2 purple up and down wheels on the side, except those were really hard to turn. But as I tried to do it, I wondered just how much harder it would be for my little niece to do this, and I realized she probably couldn't and would need help. But once that was finally done and I had the space shuttle (which has not been used in, what, 30 years? Weird) positioned in the center of the paper and it was a good size, I then turned the purple wheel over the lens to get the image completely focused so that the image on the paper was totally clear. Okaaaaaay. NOW I was ready to copy, or "trace," the space shuttle outline. THAT took me a total of 18 seconds. Well, to be honest. I guess if you remember this is for a child, who will take maybe longer than that... or will they? Not sure about that. If you knew my niece... no one can even keep up with her, so I wonder if she won't be even faster at drawing this than I am. And speaking of drawing, the provided markers don't even fit in the cups built into the "legs" of the projector contraption. Who designed this? I need to have a chat with them. And another thing, with the lights off except one desktop lamp directly over my drawing paper, I had the hardest time seeing that shuttle outline to even trace it because of the shadows caused by the projector light. I tried puting the lamp to the left, right, then turned it off.completely. By the time I had penciled in the outline, used markers and colored pencils, it had been over 2 hours and I had to take a long break because of frustration at all the time this was taking plus the fact that I had other things I needed to do and it had been 2 HOURS since I had sat down to do this and I should have been done long before now. This review is already too long, so let me just cut to the chase and say that this is not a totally worthless drawing "toy" for kids. Some future fashion designer or veterinarian or famous artist may just love it, so I could be totally wrong here, but I really believe this was a lost cause from the beginning. The projector is awkward and bulky, especially considering it's marketed for ages 5 and up. I don't see a 5-year-up adjusting the focus or the height. She's running to mom to help her each time she switches slide images, and don't tell me she's going to stay on one image for more than 5 minutes! Ha! As if. And that's another thing. Each slide "wheel" (there are 4 wheels) have 8 images, so that's a total of 32 images. And that's it. So you're basically paying $1 an image, because there are zero more images. Nada. No more. You can't even go to the company and beg for more. If they sell a ton of these projectors, sure, you can pay for overpriced disks as they become available in the future, but by then you will realize they are not worth it, not at all. Sorry I rambled, but I get very frustrated with toy manufacturers nowadays, as a lot of parents do. Some may just love this, and that's fine. I'm just telling you what I observed in my testing session. If I had a young daughter at home who expressed interest in drawing, I would start her off with a pencil and vellum (see-through) paper. Once the leads were freed up, the lightweight barrels felt balanced in hand and comfortable to hold. The pigment on these isn't the best across every shade, and several of the colors require quite a bit of pressure against the page to get a vibrant return. Despite needing extra effort to build up deep saturation, the lead core stays sturdy and resists breaking under that extra force. Otherwise, it is a good set to work with for basic sketches, labeling, or relaxing coloring sessions with the kids. It stays sitting on my home office desk for daily notes and afternoon doodling.
