Some reviewers said they applied a line of oil to a sheet of paper and then fed the paper to the shredder. Both methods should work. The best approach may be the oiled sheet. I had to remove the shredded paper bin and turn the shredder upside down to expose the cutters. The next time I will use the sheets. I've run paper through the shredder and now find that it runs quieter and smoother. Considering the lack of instructions, I'm not sure how often one should reapply the oil. The oil itself is thinner than I expected, which makes sense as it's supposed to penetrate the blades and not sit on top like other lubricant applications might. They promise rust protection, lower friction, quieter blades, and even pet safety, but the bottle has no instructions. I had to hunt down their two-year-old YouTube video to figure out you’re supposed to squirt a line of oil across the feed slot, hit reverse or forward for about 10–15 seconds, then shred a test sheet. It worked fine and didn't create a mess. I opened the confetti drawer and saw a light sheen on the recent shredded paper, so it’s definitely coating the blades without dripping all over. There’s a safety seal under the cap (a nice touch), and the tip valve is snug to prevent leakage. I tested this by tightening the valve, inverting the bottle, and squeezing pretty hard upside down into a clear plastic bag, and I didn't see any oil leak out. Still, after each use, I wipe the nozzle with a paper towel to keep things clean, as a little oil can transfer a lot. There's no smell, no weird residue. As for the non-toxic claim, their online Safety Data Sheet (SDS) (which can be found on their website if you track it down) gives nearly zero toxicity (nothing is completely non-toxic, but it can be very unlikely to cause toxicity) and is categorized as non-carcinogenic, which is in stark contrast to most other industrial-grade lubricants (think of what you'd use on a squeaky door). It doesn't shed much light on environmental impact, but it mentions that the oils in the mixture are biodegradable by microorganisms. It's hard to tell if it'll prevent long-term wear differently from other shredder lubricants, but my shredder is running smoothly and a bit quieter with less grinding than before. One of their big selling points is that it's eco-friendly for the planet, kids, pets, etc (the bottle does warn against chugging it). Planet Safe Lubricants seems like a small but reliable company, based in the U.S.. Looking at their other offerings, most of their products float around 4–4.5 stars online, with a decent number of reviews. It's a simple product, and by all indications, it's doing what it's supposed to. So if you care about a lubricant being non-toxic, this is a good choice. Note to the manufacturer, it would be good to update the bottle label to include instructions for first-time users. If it weren't for the lack of instructions, I'd give it 5 stars.
