This one is one of the few that aren’t from his “First Contact” catalogue. As always this book was well researched and written, the characters empathetic, and the story enthralling. In some ways it is a little like a young adult fiction, and that’s appropriate, as it was inspired by his daughter and her friends. That said it was also entertaining to me as an adult. Maybe the ending stretched credulity, although having read so many of his book, I guessed how Hazel and Steve were going to outwit the zombies in the animal hospital. I have now downloaded the second book in the series and look forward to reading it. The patterns are not just printed on. They are varied colored threads, machine woven to make the intricate paisley patterns, like embroidery. The vibrant, but not dayglow, colors and the light sheen of the yarn attracted me instantly. There is one caveat. Don't just throw them in the washer with your other laundry! I had a difficult time finding the washing instructions, so I thought it would be useful to put them here: CARE AND CLEAN Machine wash on delicate cycle or hand wash in cold water, use mesh bag, separate colors. Don't use dryer, don't wring or twist, lay flat to dry or hang dry, keep out of sun. Iron on low. Don't use bleach, don't use hot water, don't use vinegar. Once you master the technique, you can wind 5 small skeins in an hour. I suspect I will really enjoy working with it, but it is not for anyone who is impatient or in a hurry. Also, there was a mistake in the colors I received- I was given 2 bundles of rust/peach floss and was not given one of the blue bundles. I can work with this, and chose not to complain. I was pretty surprised when it broke (twice) under moderate tension. The 3/16" cable I'd been using before has held up fine. A quick look (see photo) of a broken end shows that the core of this stuff is essentially grey yarn rather than a wire core. Note also that the vinyl coating makes up much of the external diameter, so the actual cable part is probably 1/8". The photo also shows the cut end of conventional cable for comparison. You can see the cable core and larger diameter. I'm sure this cable is OK for clotheslines and decorative projects, but don't expect much strength from it. B07C878SK8 US
