What surprised me most was how soft the fibers are. This rug feels wonderful under bare feet! If you're looking for a plush, high pile, Lego swallowing, sound blocking carpet, this isn't it. If you want something attractive, practical, and easy to maintain, you're in the right place. The nonslip rubber backing is nonabrasive and suitable for my hardwood floors, eliminating the need for a separate rug pad. The edges are nicely bound with no loose threads. With pets in the house, vacuum performance was particularly important. I tested the rug using low and high suction, both with and without the roller brush activated, and it handled every combination well. I prefer the roller brush for pet hair and was very satisfied with the result. The low pile and smooth fibers make hair, dust, and debris easy to remove, and very few rug fibers were picked up during vacuuming. The rug is advertised as machine washable, although I haven't personally tested that yet. Washability was important to me because pets and high traffic inevitably mean stains and messes. Larger sizes will likely require a large capacity washing machine. The rug is also significantly lighter than the one it replaced, making it much easier for one person to move and reposition. It arrives folded rather than rolled, so expect some creases at first. I recommend laying it completely flat and giving the folds time to relax before arranging furniture. I was impatient and didn't do that, which meant some stretching and rearranging the following day to work out a few little hills. There were no unpleasant odors when I opened it. For a busy household with pets, this rug checks a lot of boxes. It's attractive, remarkably soft, stays put without a separate rug pad, vacuums beautifully, and is easy to handle.
