I appreciate the thick padding for comfort and to raise smaller pets up to see out the window easier; these are nice features that many do not have. It’s also very convenient that you can convert this to a pet carrier in a pinch, though I would qualify this with some caveats for your pet’s safety: 1. only only use this feature for a dog that is unlikely to try to jump out of the carrier while you are standing or in motion to avoid injury to your pet 2. only use it with a harness instead of a neck collar (this is also true for using it in the car as a car seat) and/or use an unlocked retractable leash instead of the included short tether that could leave them dangling in mid-air if they jumped out. This pet seat is easy to use once you figure it out. Technically all the info is there in the product description, but different parts of it are spread out in different areas, which makes it easy to overlook one of the most crucial pieces - how the car seatbelt attaches to it. The long buckle straps hold the pet seat in place simply by looping the rear one around the headrest of the seat it is placed in; if placed in the backseat, then the front long buckle strap also loops around the seat in front of where its placed. There is an adjustable buckle on the straps, but that is meant to adjust the length of the straps so they can reach the head rest from the carrier’s placement on the vehicle’s seat; it will never be made tight enough to serve as the primary safety mechanism. These long straps provide a secondary safety mechanism, but should NOT be used alone, as they still allow for significant shifting in every direction due to their necessary long length. The car seat belt MUST be placed through the loops on the back of the pet seat cushion in order to minimize the wiggling, and then the pet tether should be attached to the pet’s harness (not a neck collar for the pet’s safety, as that could cause neck injury or death in the event of a rapid stop). From a safety standpoint, it seems fairly secure if used the way it’s supposed to be, including placing the long straps over the seat and the car seatbelt through the fabric loops on the seat portion. I say fairly secure because it’s definitely an improvement over the zero perfection, most pets have in a car, but at the end of the day, the only thing he your dog from going out the windshield in an accident is some mediocre quality stitching on regular clothing fabric - nothing like the robust metal and nylon construction of human seatbelts. For this reason, I still use my pet’s leash attached to a snug fitting full body harness with a carabiner attached to the handle, which I then attach to the child car seat latch system in the backseat of my car.
