The Baby Dilemma (Romance, 3710) 1 A really bad apple from an author I used to trust--went in the trash! Cil*** Rebecca Winters has written some very good romance novels that I have on my "keeper shelf." So it pains me to write a negative review on someone that has been a favorite author, but this book is horrible. For me, I have to like and respect the main characters to care about what happens to them. I disliked both the hero and the heroine, if you can even call them that because they acted in petty and stupid ways. Other reviewers have given synopses of this book so I will just say that the idea of a woman leaving her husband just because some other woman shows up and claims that he is the father of her impending baby is just plain stupid. Of course the baby might not be his. The plot was based on the "big misunderstanding" ploy, where if the two main characters were just honest and had discussed what was going on all of the angst might have been avoided. Both of them were self-righteous and the total lack of honesty between them, even up until the end, made me hate them. I could not believe that most of what happened between them was based on them hiding information and misrepresenting things to each other. I disliked this book so much that I didn't even donate it to charity because it was so bad. I threw it in the recycling bin so that at least it could be reused in some other form! After this book, I will stop having this author as an auto-buy and will probably look at reviews before I ever buy another of her books. In the past, her heroes were honorable. Scott *** For the most part I enjoyed this anthology with the strongest pieces being, for me, "Lesser Demons", "Hurt Me", "Raise Your Hand if You're Dead", "The Stars are Falling" (although this story is not actually any form of speculative fiction, it is still quite eerie and touching) "Oaks Park" and "Thimbleriggery and Fledglings". I slept through "Crawlspace" and a few others that took too long to get to any kind of point, along with the massive George R. R. Martin novella which didn't really feel dark enough to qualify for inclusion here. In addition, many of the stories by Big Name authors (Neil Gaiman, Gene Wolf and, arguably, Peter Watts) are reprints from Prime's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy 2011, and nearly all of the stories here are reprints from one anthology or another. Maybe there just aren't many publications left in the horror genre, but I would've liked to see more space dedicated to reprinting worthy works that would otherwise be lost to the recycling bin. Definitely worth the discounted Amazon price, unless you already have the original anthologies. I highly recommend using a drill/driver with a clutch set to low for even torquing of the screws during assembly. I got this particular unit style for my laundry room so i could store my recycling bins in the tall lower cabinet and the detergents and such up top but after building i would not put much weight on this unit.
