I did pick up a few things that were helpful--the parts about financial education struck me as spot-on in a world where so many young people get into crushing debt for lack of knowledge. I also agree on the importance of chores, discipline and family togetherness. However, she completely lost me on pg. 157: "Our kids face the evils of the world head-on [...] sexuality, materialism, homosexuality, deviancy, violence, and the list could go on and on." Wow--HOMOSEXUALITY is grouped in there with materialism and violence?? I checked the publication date of the book and was shocked to learn that is was 2005. Merrilee's book is opinion-based, I'll grant her that--but her views are completely incompatible with modern parenting in the modern world. In this day and age, we no longer have the luxury of raising our children as sheltered--let's be honest here--bigots. My family lives in a diverse metropolitan city--and that diversity comprises culture, economy, religion and sexuality. "Satan" is not having a "field day" because my kid's camp counselor is gay. But my child is, because she has been taught the value of diversity and respect. In the end, I'll admit that Merrilee gives some of the best advice I've heard--if something doesn't fit the family's values it goes straight in the trash. Kristee*** If you are new to mindfulness (connecting body and mind) and want a beginner’s basic guide written by a dancer and mime artist, this could be a fair resource for you. If, however, you were wanting the deeper dive connecting the body and archetypal energies that the title promises, you will be disappointed. Overall I found Plonka’s approach to be ableist and ageist (e.g. she states that as people age their eyesight deteriorates and their world literally gets smaller). All of her exercise assume a level of flexibility and she doesn’t provide alternative approaches for the otherly abled. As someone who is movement impaired, I felt left out of the conversation. Upon reading Chapter 5: “The Visionary” I knew this wasn’t a book to be set aside lightly, but rather tossed with great gusto into the nearest recycling bin. Plonka, ironically not seeing herself how this chapter could be insulting, equates Steve jobs (an entrepreneur who used their abilities for capitalistic gain) to Martin Luther King (a visionary leader for social justice). The book was ruined for me at that point and I lost all respect for her as a writer. I could further critique her writing style and failure to deliver on her promise of including the archetypal energies in a meaningful way, but frankly her work doesn’t deserve any further attention on my part. Carlisle FoodService Products L1035 Stir Stick/Straw Caddie, 5" Width x 4-1/2" Height x 3" Depth 5 Brilliant for single-serve drink mix packets Clev*** I was going nuts for a while, trying to find some kind of holder for Crystal Light single-serve packets. We go through 4-5 boxes of them a week, but the boxes take up unnecessary space and tip over with the slightest touch. I needed something sturdier, which could hold a few boxes worth of packets at a time, and sugar packet holders were too short for the tall packets. These worked perfectly. There is a small shelf inside of each section that keeps the packets from settling too far down - about an inch of the packets sticks up - they are weighty enough not to easily tip over, and they each hold 3-4 boxes of packets. They do have a lip to hook them onto a condiment tray (since they are for drink stirs), but it doesn't get in the way of putting them in the cabinet - they tuck nicely against the wall - and I might later hook them on a wire organizer I'm debating on adding to my kitchen. There are now three in my house - one for my packets, one for my son's, and a shared one next to our drinks mini-fridge upstairs. And I'm no longer having to dig behind the mini-fridge for boxes of packets that fell behind, because a gust of air came down the hall. Now if they'd just sell the packets in larger quantities, so my recycling bin doesn't get so full of the little 10-count boxes, I'll be all set. :) Edit 01.07.2017: I found another handy use for these! I work from home, and my office is setup in my bedroom upstairs. So last year I upgraded from a tiny drinks-only fridge upstairs, to a larger dorm/office style fridge and a microwave. I wash and reuse plastic flatware upstairs, so the family is never short real silverware for meal time, and I've been looking for some kind of flatware caddy to keep them in. Then one day I realized that, if I take out the little shelves inside these caddies, it's a perfect fit for my flatware. I put the plastic spoons and forks handle down (doesn't matter much with the knives), and most of the handle sits within the caddie, with the entire business end sticking up for easy access inside my cabinet. As can been seen in the photos I currently have stored in these caddies: a can opener, a chip clip, a restaurant spork, plastic flatware, lemonade packets and mayonnaise packets. :) I am hoping to find an inexpensive set of permanent flatware for upstairs use, but I've been having a hard time finding something durable and cheap that doesn't have thick or oddly shaped handles. Some Guy*** I have a very narrow, but very deep garbage can opening in my apt. The only items I could find that were narrow enough for it (about 8.5") were very expensive industrial trash cans. Roughly $80 and up. I bought this as a gamble and it worked. I very very carefully and slowly cut the top lip off of this can and got it down to about 8.5" wide. I sanded the rough and sharp edges down, and squeezed it into this space. It fits snug, but it fits perfectly. We use it for recycling. We used to have a smaller can that would fill up with recycling in literally two days. This takes 4-6 depending on how much stuff we go through. Not having to empty out a recycling bin every other day is a godsend. The material is very tough. You know you're middle aged when you get excited about a trash bin, but this thing rules. Why someone designed a kitchen with an extreme narrow, but deep space like this is beyond me, but this can fixes that question.
