While I have a spring loaded tamper to ensure consistent tamping, my current digital scale has proven frustrating because it will jump from 17 to 18 g (or higher) with the addition of just a few beans, and I've found that difference can result in a shot that chokes or one that pulls too fast. That's where this mini scale comes in, as it is supposed to have precision down to 0.1 g, which espresso enthusiasts will appreciate. The packaging is bare bones, which I appreciated, no fancy packaging to add to the landfill, just the scale, a rubber mat, a USB-C cable, and a manual. The scale itself is square and super compact, which makes it suitable for travel (e.g., if you want to pack your Aeropress and your own beans). The little rubber mat is a nice addition to keep beans from scattering over your counter. In testing the scale, since I happened to have a small plastic cover for my other scale handy, I used it to measure beans -- however, any small bowl or container would do just as well. Turning the scale on via the switch on the right side of the unit, it will tare itself and be ready for measuring, so I carefully poured in beans until it hit about 17 g; from there I started adding beans - one at a time - until I got to 17.4 g. After grinding, tamping, and pulling a shot, it turned out nearly perfect - my Breville espresso machine shows the pressure and depicts the ideal range, and the pull ended up a little on the high end but not bad, coming out in a smooth stream. Although I didn't time it, I'd say it was in the preferred range of 25-30 seconds. So the scale did a great job of measuring a precise amount of beans, and so far it's been consistently measuring in the range that results in a good pull. This scale also comes with a built-in timer, which again if you're an espresso purist, you know can be used to time your shots to see if your pulls are in the recommended range. The timer comes in both manual (you start and stop it yourself) or automatic (it starts once it detects an increase in weight; of course you'll need to have your shot glass on the scale positioned on your espresso machine before turning it on, that's where the rubber mat would also come in handy by holding your glass still). While I didn't use the timer feature, it's an awesome tool to have to go along with the precise measurements, and I may give it a try in the future. I also love that it has a built in Li ion battery that can be recharged with any USB-C cable, rather than replaceable batteries. Overall, this was the last missing piece in my espresso arsenal to guarantee consistent and accurate pulls, no more wasted shots that are too fast or too slow.
