A rug with this kind of backing won’t require a rug pad, but you would do best to get a nonslip mat to go under it. I rubbed my hands over it numerous times briskly, and it did not appear to be one that would shed much. It also did not have any terrible odor to it just a typical rug smell. I bought the small size just to see if I wanted to go all out and buy the 8x10. It was lighter (a beautiful cream) than I could use because it would have been in an area people don’t take off their shoes like they should😏. I would have kept the one I ordered to use in my closet, but unfortunately it was stained down one end as if the bag it was shipped in had gotten wet and leaked a rust color liquid on it.
