They test them selves every month and record the out come of the test and tell me if there is an issue. They will also all alert you if there is an issue. They will all talk if they detect a problem and tell you which one is detecting it, so if your in the basement and the one upstairs in the hall is detecting something they all say "there is smoke in the hallway alarm may sound alarm is loud". I also found out at Christmas when i burned a pan in the oven that if the alarm goes off you can silence it with your phone and if you have a nest camera set up it will start recording the event even if you don't have the yearly subscription and it emails it to your email. Le*** I purchased these 2 detectors to replace our 20 year old Kidde/FireX hardwired smoke detectors because when I looked on the back of my old detectors they had, what looked like the same plug as the new ones did. That's the reason I purchased this brand, otherwise I would have purchased a First Alert brand. When I got them home and tried to install them I noticed that it still had the 3 prong wire pattern as the old detector did but this new detector has smaller holes for the clips that hold the plug securely to the detector. So I still ended up replacing the pigtail, which I would have had to do anyway on the First Alert brand. I just replaced them yesterday so I haven't had the chance to see if they give me any troubles. I like that they are networked to each other so if you're upstairs and something happens to the downstairs detector (like power goes out, or there's an alarm), you will hear the unit nearest you telling you what's going on downstairs. It's very comforting to be able to open your app or webpage and see that everything is working, and be notified if you lose power or a sensor goes offline. Some of the extra features like pathway lighting when you walk under your Nest Protect in the dark are things I didn't expect but love now that I have them, especially in hallways. Although test functions worked perfectly before placing each unit into service, I found out this morning one of the three units was defective. How? One of the units I placed in the adjacent bedroom/bathroom hallway 15 feet away from an overheated, smokey skillet sounded the alarm, but the one in the kitchen 9 feet away did not. I should have suspected possible damage when the battery cover would not fully close after backup batteries were inserted, but the cover closed just fine without any batteries inserted. I chocked it up to inferior Chinese manufacturing and let it go at that. Caveat emptor. (Loosely translated, 'Let the buyer beware." The buyer alone is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of an item.)
