Noise: This skimmer is insanely loud and your not going to get it to quiet down. Parts: The water inlet nozzle kept falling off the pump and the collection cup rubber gasket is oversized so it’s incredibly difficult to put back on once removed. The magnet mounts plastic screw does not hold the skimmer in place so when attempting any flow changes or trying to put the collection cup back on it easily slides down. All in all horrible product. It comes with a great little pump, that is replaceable the day it burns up. The break in period is over 24hrs. This device struggles to get that rich black protein out of the tank. I have worked every parameter of its adjustablility, and it simply will not take out the heavy protiens that contaminate an aquarium. The protiens the device is getting is a lighter type, and is very diluted (see pic). Inorder to see if it was the tank or the skimmer, I mounted another skimmer, and the results were exactly what I was looking for.....a corallife skimmer was able to extract the type of protien that needed to be removed... see 2nd pic Honestly, I believe the reaction chamber is too small on the K1, and there's no adjustablitity on the speed of the bubbles... as a result this device does NOT work on the upper range of 30 gals...infact I would not put this skimmer in anything over 15 gal. Mark*** Pros: It is a great little skimmer that skims it's butt of once you get it tuned. You tune it via a combo of turning the red stand pipe left or right to raise and lower the water level. If it is still skimming too aggressively then you can raise the whole skimmer up higher where it mounts to the tank. This will lower the water level and and help prevent overflows. It truly pull a ton of skim-mate out of my 20 gallon nano reeftank!!! Cons: It is designed for a rimless tank so I had to get creative with a Dremel routing bit to get it to sit on my rimmed tank safely. If they made the mount compatible with rimmed tanks that would be awesome! It needs a pump intake guard. I lost a Tail-spot Blenny into the pump intake. I was able to take the short guard off of a Maxi jet pump and repurpose it. The Skim-mate collection cup it too small for a skimmer this aggressive. I skim a little on the wet side but and I can easily empty the collection cup 3 times a day which is amazing considering the most fish I have ever had was 2 small Clownfish and the Tailspot Blenny and that I only feed 1 cube of frozen food per day. Over all the skimmer kicks butt once you find the sweet spot after play with the up/down height of the skimmer in relation to the mount. Especially since it only costs $69!!! If you go into it knowing you are going to have to make some mount adjustments! If you are patient and tinker with it until you hit it's sweet spot it will skim the heck out of your tank! IceCap K1-Nano Protein Skimmer, Aquarium Filter, PVC, Acrylic, 5.91 x 2.75 x 15.75 inches 3 A fickle bit of filtration Amazon C*** This was my first nano protien skimmer but it will not be my last. I have a custom 20 gallon and the only filter chamber that could accommodate the skimmer does not have a constant water line. As water evaporates the water level in that chamber changes and has a large impact on the effectiveness of this skimmer. I get around it by doing a quarter turn adjustment each morning. If you have an area where the water level is constant or an auto top off then you won't have this particular issue. The plastic tube that connects the air intake to the silicone tube arrived broken in half but i used the longer half and it works as it should. The union of the the water height adjustment gate and the main chamber is very loose and kept coming loose causing the skimmer to not function. I siliconed them in place and it works the way it was originally designed. The nib off the filter that connects to the air line is very short and since the silicone tube has to turn almost immediately upward it stretches and water can seep in to the air line at the base. This will cause salt to accumulate in the line and in a matter of days there will be little to no airflow causing the skimmer not to work. All difficulties I've experienced aside once everything is set and the stars align the skimmer does work and works quickly it foams well and every un interrupted week I empty a full dark collection cup. Ha*** I purchased this product as it was one of the few skimmers to fit in the back of the 32.5 Fluval Flex Marine... I was very excited to get things configured and moving. I was able to set up the skimmer just fine, and it ran great and productive for about 4 months... then the first incident occurred... In the middle of the night, my smoke detectors went off, and I was greeted with a room full of smoke and the smell of melted plastic.... The skimmer (recently cleaned) unexpectedly opened up a little more than usual and overflowed directly onto the wall outlet. I was able to save everything and eliminate the smell, but decided to give the skimmer another shot assuming it was my fault... another two months go by and the skimmer was working great; however I noticed prior to heading to bed one night the overflow was quickly filling again, I pulled out the Skimmer from my tank and noticed that the release valve was slowly creeping open. I have since invested in an overhanging higher quality brand with no issues. If you do set up this skimmer, just be cautious and check up on it both prior and post cleaning extra thoroughly.
