Previously I had been using zeolite for ammonia removal. The zeolite was working ok, but I am always looking for something better. I rinsed then put the white diamond crystals in my filter before I went to bed. When I got up, you could barely see my fish! I was not sure what caused the cloudiness until i tested the white diamond crystals. I put 1 cup of the crystals that had already been in the filter into a tea strainer. Then I proceeded to pour a cup of distilled water through it. The water came out super cloudy. It looked like someone had put milk in the glass, then poured it out and filled it with water. As far as how good it works for ammonia removal, I can not say. I have removed it from my filter and will not be using it any more. My advice is stick with the zeolite and do your water changes. Arm*** I purchased an FX4 in December 2025 for a 280L (72.2USG) freshwater tank. Overall, I am happy with it, however, there is one aspect of this filter which all buyers need to consider. When you plug in the motor/pump for the first time, it will run for a minute, then it will stop and then it will run again. Fluval/Hagen advertise this "feature" as a way to help the pump get rid of air bubbles in the lines... which I think is silly but whatever. The annoying part is that the pump from that point forward will shutdown every 12 hours for one minute and then start up again... Once again, they say this "feature" is to help get rid of air in the lines and help prime the filter. However, let's be realistic if your pump/filter has not primed in a few minutes and certainly not by 12 hours, then there is something horribly wrong with your plumbing. Anyway, the pump turning off and then on again WILL STARTLE ALL OF YOUR LIVESTOCK. I witness it every day as the pump turns back on and all poor fish jump. I don't know how will affect their lifespan but I am sure it doesn't help. There is no way to bypass this "feature" - unless you're willing to buy an extra motor and do a bit of reverse engineering.. the motor is potted but it is likely a small PCB with a timer that can be found someplace. Anyway, apart form this, I am happy with it's quiet operation and flow rate. B00QCLJQLK US

But yeah, needs some help Dennis*** So I ordered this for my 55g hex aquarium that was running with a cannister filter. I was very excited when it arrived but was quickly let down. I struggled a bit getting it installed as the bracket didn't really fit the rim of my aquarium. I was able to turn the screws around and kind of rig it so that it was secure on the rim of the tank. When installed in the tank, it didnt have enough suction/flow to keep the skimmer at the water level. I tried for awhile to adjust and if I took the filters out it barely had enough to create a good flow. So I hopped online to see what I was doing wrong. Come to find out... Lots of people had the same issues with the product. But i did learn that if you took a drill and drilled out the holes larger on the spray bar it helped create the suction needed to keep enough flow to keep the skimmer basket level with the surface of the water and work as it was supposed to. Things seemed great now, and it was working as planned, however the filters became dirty and clogged about every 3 days needed replaced or cleaned out. After a couple weeks of that I just took them out and tossed them and used the skimmer without pads for circulation and surface agitation. Also be preparred to clean it about once a week if your light is anywhere near shining on it. B01AHIOM8A US

I had some issues keeping connectivity to it because I didn't have enough powered Zwave devices to reach it. I added some Zooz switches to rooms along the way and the power strip is now staying connected great. I think the power sensors are a little off though when testing and checking. I have some LED lights for the aquarium that ramp up to 30W and down to off. When the lights are in moonlight mode, the power reading quickly is changed to 0w even though I know it is using a few watts of power. I wish the device was made a bit more durable because Zooz told me I could not run my 15w aquarium filter pump on it. So if the product does fail, I will replace with the TPLink power strip or build my own. So far I have been real happy with the Zooz products and their support was responsive as well. B01I34LMQA US
