Lionel CW-80 80-Watt Transformer 3 Item works ok if you know how to trick it CCR *** I purchased a ready to run Lionel O scale train set for my son and it came with this transformer and it has caused me some headaches to get it to work correctly. At first I hooked up the train set as instructed in the directions that came with the kit and we could only get the train to run forward, it would not stop or go into reverse as described. I was ticked off I figured I had just wasted a bunch of money on a toy for my son. Well off to the internet to figure out what was wrong since it was long past the hours Lionel phone support was open. Long story short I figured out that there are basically 2 versions of this product, the first design has a date code before 2006 and most of those have problems, the one I had was the later one having a date code after 2006 and these will have a 'G' in the date code. These later ones are the good ones that have been redesigned. Well mine wasn't working correctly right out of the box. So I think they still have some design issues with these. Well after more reading I figured out that the way the Lionel trains work is that the voltage on the track should drop below 1 volt AC between the center track and the outside rail when the reverse button is pressed to make the train reverse. So to make this work correct you need to add an electrical load between the red and black terminal on the back of the transformer to make it work correctly. To fix this I added a 1000 ohm 1 watt resistor between the red and black transformer output terminals and this makes the voltage drop below 1 volt when the reverse button is pressed ,and now my train runs correctly. If you don't have a resistor lying around you can get one at an electronics store, or add a lighted lionel car or a small automotive type light bulb at the back of the transformer, any of these will work. With this workaround the transformer works perfectly and my son loves it and the train but Lionel missed big time on the design of this. I think they should put a addendum on their website explaining this issue with this product. Another negative about this product is it doesn't have a On/Off switch so you need to unplug it all the time or plug it into a power strip with a switch to shut if off. I find that feature useful (when going out of town, I just switch it off instead of unplugging it). Others have said that the outlets are too close together and that's my one complaint about htis product as well. They are closer together than I thought which makes plugging in and taking out difficult or very limited if you have anything bigger than a standard two or three-prong plug. This review is merely to let perspective buyers know TWO VERY IMPORTANT details...and they both have to do with the power... FIRST, the power adapter may as well be an automobile...it's just that freaking HUGE...has the blocked end with horizontal prongs...if you don't have an end opening on your power strip, you'll have to use an extension or it will take up 2-3 slots on your strip...how messed up is that? SECONDLY, the power switch...IT'S ON THE BACK...I'm sorry, but why on earth would you produce a rack mounted product with the power switch on the back? So inconvenient...and yes, mine is in a rack...and the unit is not that deep...so, it's a long reach inside the rack to turn it on...may either leave the power switch on and just plug/unplug as needed or use a dedicated power strip and use its switch to turn on/off...either way, not happy! But I'd say, at the very least, if the power button were on the front, I'd give this unit a 5 star rating...I'm that impressed with my initial test!!! I have it connected to 7 AXIS PoE injectors powering 7 IP Cameras and I used the 8th outlet with a power strip and a 24 port network switch, a router and a modem. With all that, the load is 0.9 Amps. I am not using the temperature sensor option. I have this device ping each camera every minute or so; after 3 failures or whatever I chose, it power-cycles the failing camera for a minute and the camera reconnects to the network after reboot, awesome. Since I installed the device the IP cameras are always online, I've never had to visit the client just to disconnect a power cord or call someone to do it for me again, and my client's investment paid itself in no time. If there is a major network problem I can log-in remotely and power-cycle manually the devices on #8. UPDATE: 2016, 4 years later the device still working like the first day. I moved the front ones back for my power strip and patch panel. And mounted 2 shelves on the back set. I'll post pictures next time I'm over there. I had first ordered the 33" but when I got it it was badly damaged. Scratched, dented etc. I sent it back and ordered this one instead. It came in a box with styrofoam. It was perfect.
