Mary Wi*** So, what you've got here calls itself a rice cooker, but in reality it works like a basic saucepan for folks like me who haven't got a traditional kitchen stove or stovetop to work with. It has a removable inner pot and lid, both which can be tossed into the dishwasher to be washed. It also has two temperature settings, as typical of this style of rice cooker (high and low) and will automatically switch itself to low if there isn't enough weight on the pressure sensor (such as if the pot was removed) or if it's reached too high of a temperature (so the contents don't burn). I've had a smaller rice cooker in this exact same style (by another brand) for years, and this particular feature always irked me because I couldn't quite get the temperature high enough for the things I was cooking unless it stayed on the high setting. I also couldn't cook unless the lid stayed on it, because otherwise it wouldn't retain enough heat to cook anything. -This- rice cooker, however, doesn't give me near as much of a headache. Not only does it not switch onto the "low" setting as often, but the "low" setting is actually still warm enough that I can leave the pot on to simmer! It maintains the heat even with the lid off!! I am in love! I feel like I've got an old friend (my old stove) back! I'm so much more confident for creating large batches of rice, gravy, sauce, stir-fry, and one-pot meals now, all things which I've now happily cooked in this so humbly named "rice cooker". Mary Wi*** This neat little device calls itself a programmable rice cooker, but (for me) ends up being something between a slow cooker and a pressure cooker. I've been taking frozen ground beef out of the freezer and cooking it on the slow cooker setting of this device in preparation of turning it into soup and chili and was truly impressed by two things: one was that it got the meat more tender and easier to break apart than my regular slow cookers ever did, despite using less water, and the other was that it fully cooked the ground beef faster than my slow cooker. I was surprised on all of these points. I knew that having a gasketed, vented lid would help it to hold in moisture and cook faster, but not to such a degree! I haven't had a working, full-sized stove for years, rather relying on my various cooking gadgets, but this little powerhouse won me over within a day with how well it cooked! It even let me make a full pot of chili that looked and tasted as if it had simmered in the slow cooker all day, in only a few hours. I was much impressed. No device is perfect, though, and it does bother me quite a bit that the inner lid with gasket can't be removed to be washed in the dishwasher, nor can the vent, like it can on my smaller rice cooker. This is a major bummer for me, because I'll typically go out of my way to purchase kitchen gadgets with removable plates and pieces just so they can be thoroughly washed, easily. So far I'm doing ok with washing it with warm water and vinegar, but I can already tell it'll be a source of worry in the future. I also find myself wishing that the lid was hinged front-to-back because, in the place where I've got set aside for it in my kitchen space, the lid opens on the opposite side that I need it to. Having a front-to-back hinged lid would make it more handy for my circumstances. I just don't have much space to work with. This is truly a nitpicky thing, though, because this device is versatile, fast, and fabulous, and it's so quickly become one of my main appliances that it's going to be difficult if I ever have to do without it!
