I got the 200w version for my 20 gallon long community aquarium. My old heater still worked but it was a long, wand-style heater with a manual dial at the top that was awkward to read and use. I had to place it at an angle to keep it fully submerged, and it wasn't a pretty sight. I used thermo tape on the outside of my aquarium to determine the temperature, but those aren't very precise. I was eager to replace it with a more compact, digital model that I could control outside the tank. This heater was a great choice. It fits straight up-and-down with room to spare, and is more attractive than the old one. It easy to conceal behind plants and decorations and comes with two removable suction cups with a third for a spare. The housing, or cage, of the heater is removable, as well, if you prefer. One of my favorite features of this model is the auto shut-off for low water levels, and auto power-on when higher water levels are restored. That means that I don't have to pull the plug every time I clean, unlike my old heater. I couldn't be happier with the underwater portion of the heater. I am attaching photos of the old and new heaters for comparison. What I do have a bit of an issue with, and is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5, is the HUGE control module outside of the tank. This thing is a monstrosity! Fortunately, I am able to tuck it behind the tank. There is just no reason it needs to be this big. It will max out around 93 degrees. Then start back over at low 60's. I am so far enjoying it. It isn't over loading my circuit plug in. But I am using a protected electric bar. Justin *** The heater worked very well for the first winter. Setting the temp was easy and the Display showed the current water temperature. Installed this pond heater In my Aquaponic system. 300gal IBC tote. I have the System installed in a greenhouse also using a gas heater. I selected the pond heater to maintain the water temperature above 68° to maintain the nitrification bacteria. It held the temperature steadily. The heater only lasted one and a half winters. The heat element has a large amount of calcium buildup. I believe this is the cause of the heater failure, thus Not allowing the heat to dissipate from the heat elements efficiently. Not sure what the solution would be as Most ponds and aquaponic systems have hard water. In summary, I would plan on replacing the heater every fall or trying to clean it in the spring. I trust my heater probe with my controller that I have calibrated with multiple devices to get it as accurate as I can.
