It's a plastic burning smell. Used it several times and it still hasn't gone away. It also took a few days for the smell to go away. Used it outside a couple times and the smell is still strong for being outside. Not sure if it's safe to continue to use it. Super disappointed. The air fryer basket also cut up my hands while washing it. Please be careful as the mesh in the basket is sharp! The fryer did cook our food nicely, but it just didn't feel safe to continue. As for usefulness, I'll be honest: I typically use a tray as a catch below the air fryer basket, so soiling on the oven floor isn't usually a problem for me. That said, I can absolutely see the value for anyone who uses the air fryer basket without a tray underneath — drips and spills would go straight to the bottom of the oven cavity without something like this in place. The washable and reusable design is a definite plus. Four in a pack means you always have a clean one ready to go. My one wish? A product that keeps the sides and top of the oven cavity clean — those are the surfaces that really need help and are the hardest to tackle. But that's a problem for another product to solve. The raised basket allows air to circulate around the food, giving everything a crispier finish than cooking directly on a baking sheet. Grease also drains nicely into the tray underneath, which helps keep food from sitting in excess oil. The stainless steel feels thick and sturdy, and after multiple uses I haven't noticed any warping or discoloration. The large cooking surface is probably my favorite feature since it allows me to cook a lot of food at once. Cleanup is mixed. The bottom tray washes up very easily, but the mesh basket takes a little more effort because food can stick to it. That's really my only complaint with the design. One thing that was my mistake is that this set is much larger than I expected. I had originally planned to use it in my toaster oven, but I didn't pay close enough attention to the dimensions before ordering. It fits my regular oven perfectly, though.
