I did buy a cotton bag used to make nut milk and I put my coffee grinds in it instead of the mesh cup because I like my brew strong. I use 3 cups of coffee, let it bloom and make sure all the grinds are saturated, then I finish filling with water, refrigerate and let sit 24 hours. So far no leaking. OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker Replacement Paper Filters, Brown, 50 Per Box (Pack of 2) 1 Silly Expensive and Likely NOT Needed by You rac*** I have just purchased an OXO Cold Brew Maker so will be looking at the filter issue BUT these won't even get in the tests because they are STUPID expensive. Decent coffee filters should cost about $.02@ when bought in quantities of 100 or more. These are more than 10X that cost AND are brown paper. Of course, cold brewing already "wastes" coffee compared to hot brewing because cold uses considerably more coffee per cup so perhaps economics doesn't matter to you... Many brown papers contribute odd flavors to coffee so despite the folks leery of bleached papers, you don't find many makers of top line gear recommending or selling brown paper. In any case, if you understand paper making processes you already known that all paper is exposed to a range of chemicals during manufacture anyway no matter if its brown or bleached. Whether a filter is needed at all is not just a matter of taste. In fact it is primarily determined by: 1) The size and quality of the coffee grind used. ALL grinders produce fines plus the desired size set by the user- a bimodal distribution. Fines make up the largest number of particles in a grind by far and also a fair per cent of the mass. But manipulating grind size will allow minimizing the need for a filter and maybe, with correct screen size eliminate it entirely. ALL expert coffee making practices emphasize use of a high quality grinder as a very necessary part of making top quality coffee (FWIW, at present I use a Baratza Virtuoso Preciso). 2) Screen Size Selected by OXO. Published tests of the OXO indicate it makes a clean cup simply by following makers recommendations but do not include information on how the coffee used was ground. 3) Personal Tastes and Idiosyncrasies. I have consumed coffee my whole life and suddenly at almost 70 years old have developed major gut problems with high coffee acids and particulates (but not caffeine). So I can no longer drink drip made through a gold screen in my Technivorm 781 to SCAA Gold stds. Also have similar problems with brews from moka pots. All of which annoys me greatly because I love high quality coffee to the extent of roasting/grinding my own so it is fresh and top quality. Going to clean cold brew fixes the particulate and acid problems I have WITHOUT any need for filters. (To date I have made cold brew in an Espro Press, a French press with fine dual screens and no paper filtration has been needed.) Any filtration of any beverage, from wine to beer or whatever, reduces flavor and alters tastes so filters should be used only when required to achieve a desired effect, even if that effect is only easier removal for cleaning. I've got an Aeropress so will answer the filter size question when my OXO arrives. It appears the OXO is as easily cleaned with or without filter so I see no need to automatically assume a filter is necessary or useful EDIT I tested the Aeropress and OXO filters in the OXO Cold Brewer by measuring the time to filter 1L (34 oz) of cold water. The OXO filter averaged 1.7 minutes while the Aeropress filter averaged 4.0 minutes. So the Aeropress filter could add 2-3 minutes to what is a 6-8 minutes collection time using the screen only. I prefer its fit even though it is a bit larger than the OXO. I still see no reason to filter but if you do, I'd go for the Aeropress- unless you happen to be a speed freak- but then why do you own a cold brewer in the first place? B017KUELI4 US

The filter does leave some residue, no matter how course I grind the brew. It lacks some of the nuance from my Oxo, but it takes no space on the counter, I make 700ml of cold brew (about enough for two cups in the morning, two in the afternoon), and then I make a new batch. Every day I have fresh brew and it only takes the time required to grind beans and fill with water. I have found that with about 8-10 hours, it's a nice mellow brew straight, but with a longer, 16 hour+ brew, it develops more flavor but I recommend cutting the concentrate with a bit of water. I don't finish the last few ml, as it has too much sediment. If you like easy pour over, this one is great. If you want to dial in a near perfect concentrate, I recommend the Oxo. B017KUELI4 US
