We've tried soooo many ways to curl her hair and get it to stay in. This curling iron, along with professional performer grade hairspray did the trick. Very easy to use, we can get her whole head done in ringlet style curls in about a half hour, and they stay in! It uses pretty high heat, so I would not recommend for daily use. I really like the ventilated metal tray on the top. It is really nice not having to wait for things like curling irons to cool off before setting them down. The cart also has organizational slots that can hold various items, which makes them easy to access. There is an additional shelf on the bottom that offers more storage. My favorite feature is the peg board like vertical surface where hooks can be placed. The numerous holes allow the layout to be changed as needed, which is really nice. One reason for this is that while the groove molded into these plastic blocks can support the brim in the desired shape, it does not 'grab' or put any pressure on the latter, which is needed for creating curls from scratch; a proper curling iron would be a better investment if you are trying to do that. Also, while the groove is radiused slightly to follow the curvature of the brim, it is not easy to move the curler back and forth along the edge of the brim like you would with a curling iron. Therefore, these curlers seem to be designed mainly for static applications: You would use steam to soften the spot that requires reshaping, apply the curler, wait for the brim to cool down and stiffen up, then move to the next spot needing treatment and repeat the same steps. Indeed, the fact that these two curlers combine to provide 4 distinct groove sizes makes static application all the more likely when the original brim came with variable curl geometry, as vintage and good quality modern bowlers and toppers always did. The shallower grooves can help to reshape the small curls on the front and back, while the deeper grooves would be used to restore shape to the more pronounced curls on the sides. As it were, these grooves are a near perfect fit for the gently upswept curls on my modern-made bowler, but they are of no use on my vintage hats with sharp angular curls.
