7017 Ionic Silver Stick (24776) 1 is this even safe? pri*** everyone saying they will use actual silver or copper or something other than this ionic stick in their water, DO NOT do this! firstly, it probably won't work for but a short period of time as the silver ions on the surface would not replenish itself like this stick does. secondly, i'm not sure if this would maintain "safe" levels of silver in the water. which brings me to the question...does anybody know if this method is even safe? i've been trying to research on this, and it seems that 99% of what i can find are silver marketers rejecting and trying to disprove the FDA's 1999 ruling to prohibit the claiming of beneficial health effects of silver. the only other common application of silver in water or anti-microbial effects are in hospitals--but this is largely for temporary use. since I couldn't find any legitimate sources of information on this application os ionic silver, i'm guessing its effects on the human body is relatively unknown. it is know that long-term exposure/intake to a similar silver application, silver colloid, can cause argyria. i believe this is why air-o-swiss states that only "safe" levels of silver is contained in the water. however, since there's seemingly not much research out there on the topic, how can they know what "safe" is? is this level of concentration relative to frequency or proximity of humidifier use? is there a risk of over exposure if the ionic silver stick is defective or is damaged/torn? i am asking air-o-swiss and awaiting a response on this. if anyone else can provide some legit clarity on this topic, i'd appreciate it. fyi, the demineralization cartridges also contain ionic silver on their surface. since i already spent hundreds on my air-o-swiss humidifier, and have been using it for months, i'm thinking i'll just refrain from replacing the cartridge and ionic silver stick and just regularly clean out the humidifier which i've had to do anyways because the pink/red buildup of bacteria spreads all over the inside (especially in the many small, hard-to-reach areas). after realizing the time and cost associated with using distilled water only (did this for a few days), i decided to boil a large pot of tap water to reduce bacteria and let the minerals settle some to the bottom and i've only used this kind of water in the humidifier, yet the bacteria is still everywhere. it became like this within 2-3 weeks of use. so it does not seem that the silver is keeping the water that clean. They all have different strengths and weaknesses, some of them more annoying than others. Ultimately it comes down to which imperfections you find least irritating. Pros: - Puts out a ton of vapor!! You'll have to refill frequently, but that's only because it's doing its job! - Adjustable nozzle works well, and I like that you can split it into two different directions - No silly removable gasket on filler cap to lose or misalign Cons: - Humidity adjustment has very little effect. Even at the lowest setting a lot of water is still put out - Fan speed is not adjustable, only vapor content - Fan is annoying. I won't call it "loud", but it is louder than all my other units, and the pitch of the sound is irritating. I can't use this in my bedroom. Neutral: - This is a relatively compact unit which means it has a relatively small tank which combined with the high water output means refilling 2-3 times a day for constant operation. - I have yet to see a humidifier tank that is painless to refill, and this one is no exception. When you flip it upside down to fill it two things happen: The vapor nozzle falls out, and condensed vapor trapped in the vent tube drips everywhere. - Difference between warm and cool mist is not very significant. You can pretty much only feel a difference within the first few inches, and there is no visible or audible difference. My warm mist humidifier has no visible vapor, but it is a boiling type as opposed to an ultrasonic type... Maybe that is the difference? - Significant plastic odor for several weeks of constant use, but that seems to have dissipated after a few thorough cleanings. I'm not sure if the multiple cleanings finally cleared it up, or just running enough through the filter... I'd suggest a very thorough cleaning before first use just in case. Closing: I have owned several Vicks/Hunter/Kaz humidifiers in ultrasonic cool mist and boiling warm mist varieties. Every single one of them without exception has some serious flaw, but I have found that each of them has their uses. The small ultrasonic humidifiers are nice in a bedroom where their relatively quiet operation won't keep you awake, but are rarely large enough for bigger rooms. The large boiling humidifiers have a long time between refills and can help warm up a cool dry room in winter, but the bubbling noise is hard for me to sleep with. ALL of them have some refilling issues, some more than others... The best I've found so far has been the big vicks double tank warm mist humidifier. So where does that leave this humidifier? It's too noisy for my bedroom, yet too small for larger common areas which would make you think it doesn't have a place... But that isn't the case. Given its portable size, this is my go to unit when I want a little extra humidity in a room. It's easy to maneuver and you can direct the mist where you want it, and once you figure out how to refill it without spilling water (and parts) everywhere, you can refill it from most sinks. I've had it for just over a month and have only added distilled water to the humidifier 2x. Once when setting it up and once two days ago. To be fair, I live in a mild climate, so it's likely far easier for hold the humidity here and I'm currently only housing about 25 cigars (about 1/2 capacity). The box is very well constructed, which, as several others have mentioned, surprised me considering the price. Heavy lid, decent seal. EDIT: So after a 3 months I have a few more points - The humidity gauge gave up after about 4 weeks. It's waaaay off now. I never really had high hopes for it, but at least it made it one month. I picked up a Xikar digital hygrometer which I probably should have done right when I bought this. I've since purchased another, larger humidor because this really is pretty small. It holds 30 sticks comfortably. Like other reviews here, I really don't see how you'd get 50 standard size cigars (45 to 60 gauge) in here without packing them down. I will still keep this on my desk because it is a nice looking box, but I'd not recommend this box for your main storage if you buy more than a few cigars at a time. The screen on humidifier started to show corrosion after about 3 months. It's a really basic humidifier and I simply replaced it with the Xikar gel humidifier. You probably want to get one of these right off the bat as it's a far better humidity system. That's not a knock on this box though, as I've never seen any mass-produced humidor come with anything better. Take the time to season your humidor - I followed the seasoning instructions that come with the box, but mine still seemed to hold for a while, then drop, then jump over 70% then drop again. This happened for a few weeks until the interior wood evened out. It really is worth getting a few of the Boveda seasoning packs and just suffer for the 14 day seasoning period to avoid these fluctuations. I did use some silicone aquarium sealer and ran a small bead around the inside of the glass where it met the wood. This seems to be a problem with many glass top boxes. This helped to hold the humidity and removed a "fail point" that I didn't know about when I bought this box. the silicone is odorless and is safe for cigar storage. if you don't want to do that, then I'd really recommend getting a solid top box. To sum up: if you want a secondary storage box for your desk, or you only keep a few cigars around and just need a nice place to store them, then I would still recommend this humidor. Do pick up a gel-based humidifier and a digital hygrometer right away. If you buy more than a box at a time, go bigger (100-150 capacity) and consider an option without a glass top to avoid surprise leaks, or use silicone to ensure the seal. B00309VX2C US

I placed the humidifier in the bedroom, and no more problems. This machine runs quietly. The only drawback is that some of the areas on the bottom stand can be difficult to get to, in order to clean.
