I rarely see them in use, they seem to prefer a small bowl with standing water. 🤷♀️ This new water dispenser has a rechargeable battery, so you can place the fountain anywhere your heart desires indoors. And if your preferred spot is plug adjacent that works too, since it comes with a wall plug and a lengthy cord. To start, just fill up the clean water tank, pop on the lid and carry it to the fountain, with no spilling at all! The fresh water storage tank is very large and has a super sturdy leather carrying strap. In fact, the whole unit is great quality and honestly seems built to last. Once the fresh water tank is placed on top of the control unit, after the control unit has been slipped over the top of the waste water tank, just click in the separate water dish and push a button to turn on the unit. The next step fascinates our curious cats. Once the unit turns on, the sensor in the water dish determines the dish is empty and needs to be filled. Water then gently flows from the fresh water tank through a portal just above the water dish, automatically stopping when the dish is full. The cats love to watch that, which is great for me, because they know where to find a fresh water source. The whole operation is whisper quiet, too. There are settings available to have the unit empty and refill the water dish at 3 or 6 hour intervals, or the “AI” setting that apparently uses the dish’s sensor to empty and refill the dish when the water drops below a certain level. When the dish empties, it gently tilts and deposits the old water through a grate into the wastewater tank. That tank is also generously sized and can hold several deposits of old water. Once again, this process is so gentle and quiet that our cats are intrigued and not a bit frightened of their new water dispenser. Speaking of clean water, this unit requires no filters or pumps whatsoever! That eliminates the cost of filters or replacing a faulty pump. This water fountain is very affordable and not having to purchase maintenance supplies makes it even more of a money saver. I have to admit, it took me a couple of days to get fully acquainted with the different controls and comfortable with the automatic water dish empty and refill process (initially I set it for 6 hour intervals to be sure all was working well). The instructions that come with the unit are minimal, so I used learn as you go to get comfortable with everything. I’m really happy with this water fountain. It truly has no filter and yet has a design which keeps the water in decent and fresh condition, mostly. You fill the top compartment with water and so there is probably enough in there for a week or two. It then has a sensor which pours water automatically into a little stainless steel tray. Then when the water in this drinking tray (where your cat or dog will actually be drinking out of) is below 20% left (or every three or six hours) it drains out the water into that little tray into a special wastewater tank. I estimate the wastewater tank probably will last about 4 to 7 days without having to dump it. This design means the exposed water in the drinking tray only gets used once and then is dumped into the wastewater tray to be discarded. The possible weakness here is the water in the top storage tray. You might want to just dump it out and refill every three days or so (and likely clean it too) just to ensure it is as clean as possible. However this likely isn't 100% necessary as long as you regularly clean the top storage tray regularly. Another potential issue is I would not consider this a standard water fountain where the water flows all the time. It only flows into the drinking tray once until it is discarded and new water is brought in. So the water isn't continually flowing at all. So to your cat this will likely be like drinking standing water and so some picky cats might not like it. A small nit pick I have with this fountain are the options for dumping the old water and bringing in fresh water. There is an AI mode which dumps the water automatically when at 20% left in the drinking tray. And there are also other modes for dumping the water every three or six hours. I would have liked to see options for every 12 or 24 hours also. To me 12 hours would be more ideal and mean less wasted water when in a household with a single cat who doesn't tend to drink much water. 24 hours would probably more mirror what most people do as far as manually providing fresh water daily to their pets in a bowl they manually fill. Other pluses with this include it being very quiet (there is no flowing water most of the time) and also the fact that it has a big battery which is charged by plugging it in or can be charged manually. The battery is claimed to last up to 180 days so this should be adequate for most people who, for whatever reason, do not wish to plug this in continually. Another thing which I like about this design is that if the battery runs out or it stops completely for whatever reason it should still leave some water in the tray for your pet. Not a lot but probably enough for a day or so. This is in contrast to some other designs where if the unit stops almost nothing is left for your pet. It's nice to know that if the power goes out and the battery doesn't kick in for some reason, your pet will still likely have water for a day or so. What would really take this to the next level would be a model which has continual flow and has hookups for the water inlet and drain. This would provide flowing water for your cat (which many prefer) while also eliminating the need to manually dump or refill the water. And to really take it over the top, perhaps some sort of self cleaning mode where it would occasionally run high pressure water through the system maybe with some sort of cleaning detergent so that it could self clean for months while keeping sanitary for your pet. Yuck. Rac*** Good idea, extremely disappointing execution. The app did not alert me when the tank was empty. In fact, the app always showed that both tanks were good. The power cord is very short compared to other cat water fountains I’ve had. Also, the bowl part gets DISGUSTING and draining it doesn’t help!! I have 2 senior cats that are now missing most of their teeth, which apparently means a lot of their saliva gets in the water bowl and creates this disgusting film on top of the water. Even when the bowl drains, the spit slime stays on the metal part so even though it’s new water it still looks absolutely foul. The only small crevices that need to be cleaned is the tube that sucks up the water and the flower where it comes out, and they both pop right off and are easy to clean. My cat is a big fan and adjusted to it right away. The only complaint I have is that the water flow isn’t quite strong enough, I was expecting it to flow out of the flower more but it is more of a trickle. Luckily my cat doesn’t seem to mind but if your cat needs the running water, keep that in mind.
